''..Divorce also is big business for the celebrities...'' -Sandra Jarvis Tells Andrew Adedayo Adetoye.
Since mid-2014, I got caught up with activities of celebrities who
are always in the news, sometimes for the wrong reasons, like divorce,
separation, nudity, etc. Well, I set out on a difficult mission to know
how much the media world has helped to create 'celebrity image' that is
in contrast with the real personality image, and how society has been
influenced to evolve as a result. I understand that the issues under
consideration here will elicit divergent views and consensus may be
difficult to reach, but we will keep the debate going with the hope that
the media and celebrities will align for greater good of society,
modeling the future we desire for kids everywhere. Sandra Jarvis,
London-based women empowerment and life coach, author, entrepreneur and
events host, in this exclusive interview, shares her thoughts with me.
As you read on, it is my pleasure to welcome you to this exciting Blog.
Feel free to check other posts, and feel free to let us know what you
think.
It is an honor to have you Sandra share with us your thoughts. Thank you. How are you doing?

How is the mood like in your host country since the yuletide season?
Sandra:
Over the last few months in the UK, there have been much concern over employment, the wages are not increasing, but the standard of living is high. More and more people are using their creativity in creating more income for themselves, with some people opting to work 2-3 jobs to make ends meet.
There have been strikes including tube workers demanding more money and the oncoming elections are upon us in a few months, time, so that in itself should be interesting. With unemployment high, there have been a number of individuals losing their homes or unable to pay their gas and electricity bills. Also, there has been a large increase in popularity for networking marketing companies as an alternative way of earning extra monies, selling beauty products etc.
Let’s talk about celebrities in general and the influence of the media. First, what’s your perspective of who a celebrity is?
Sandra:
Things have changed over the years, especially as a result of the internet, a celebrity is someone famous for something eg. Marilyn Monroe was famous for her acting. Sidney Poitier was a Grammy Award Afro-American actor in the 1960s. These days celebrities are graded from A List to D List status. A List are the most successful actors/actresses, singers/rappers in their fields while a D List celebrity appears on the fly on the wall documentaries which have grown in popularity over the last decade or have been relegated to the D List, as they are no longer seen as current in the eyes of the mainstream media.
We are seeing more of this type of celebrity in the form of fly on the wall programmes springing up. The Kardashians are a prime example of what is being put out for entertainment. Although Kim Kardashian has been attacked for “being famous for doing nothing”, that is not quite true. The Kardashian family strengths truly lies in Public Relations and creating stories for the masses, and, from the results they have been getting and the amount of money they have been making over the last 10 years, they are a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment business.
Who are your favorite celebrities while growing up as a kid?
Sandra:
I loved Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Farah Fawcett Majors (Charlies Angels),
Who are your favorite celebrities today?
Sandra:
My tastes have changed and I am no longer in awe of “celebrities” as the majority of their behaviours away from the limelight is questionable, and far from being role models. I do like to watch Will Smith as some of the videos he has done on having a positive attitude has really endeared him to me. I am really into celebrities who are using their name, money and influence to make the world a better place. I do not appreciate celebrities that spout foul and offensive lyrics or lines as I think this is detrimental to the mental, emotional and psychological effects it will have on the masses. Such offensive lyrics are divisive and we see people acting out eg. Justin Bieber, Chris Brown
I do like Motivational Speakers like Lisa Nichols, Iyanla Vanzant because of the work that they are doing to heal the minds, hearts of the masses. One of my favourite celebrities has been Oprah Winfrey for the work she has been doing over the years to heal the masses for decades. I also hold Oprah in high regard for how she uses her money and influence to make this world a better place.
Are celebrities over-hyped?
Sandra:
Yes, indeed celebrities are over-hyped. They are far from role models, eg. Justin Bieber, Beyonce with her “nothing there – type outfits”, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Kanye West etc People that enter into that arena often end up dead, addicted on a variety of substances, bed-hopping, destructive individuals, and it is getting worse. The more you gravitate to become famous is the more it seems the majority of individuals become dysfunctional. The young children these days all they want is fame, their aim in life is to become famous and make loads of money!
How do you assess the influence of the media on celebrities, particularly their private lives?
Sandra:
For most celebrity they are motivated to keep their name in the papers, as this is how they make their money, and keep people interested in their brand to have all the best projects on the table, so they can make loads of money and continue their plush lifestyle. The more column inches the better, all publicity whether good or bad is keeping them in the public eye. Here is the thing, if they were emotionally unstable before becoming a celebrity, being in the public eye will reveal and greatly magnify their flaws, weaknesses and insecurities. The pressure to keep looking young, slim, fit is immense and not everyone can cope which is why you see a high rate of suicides, destructive, abusive behaviours. The young children are watching this inappropriate behaviour on-screen and off and if their parents are not correcting them and instructing them, they too will begin to mimic similar behaviours and create destructive habits and relationships just like their favourite celebrities.
There has been much controversy surrounding several celebrity marriages in recent years. Are you worried?
Sandra:
Well yes we are all connected the phrase “monkey see what monkey do” is a great analogy. Until people become conscious and desire the “truth” we will have more of the same, with individuals flitting from one relationship to another. The majority of celebrities are not looking to become better human beings and focusing on their spirituality, the majority are concerned with creating more success at whatever cost. There is no escaping the fact that Christian marriages are being terminated at an equal rate of non-Christians. This in itself is worrying, as it means something is not working in the hearts and minds of the Christian people. Perhaps people’s bums are on the seats of the churches, but their minds are not on God and this is reflected in the divorce rates. As long as we are distracted and seduced by “celebrity” we cannot keep our eyes on God, who is supposed to be our 1st love.
So yes, I am worried that people will not open up their eyes and realise that as long as we are minding other people’s business ie. the celebrities with such dysfunctional lives, we cannot seek or find God.
Over the years, what trends have you noticed when it comes to celebrity marriages?
Sandra:
They are meeting each other, getting into bed the same night and getting married pronto eg. Stacey Dash, Brigit Nielsen, Khloe Kardashian and each of these marriages ended up in divorce. Most celebrities do not know themselves, so they distract themselves by refusing to connect with God and spiritual laws that would enable them to experience the peace that surpasses all understanding in themselves, and the relationships they choose. Some celebrities are marrying over and over. This is sending out mixed singles to young children, By the time that these children grow up, will there be any shred of morals and Godly principles for them to cling to? My prayer is that the people awaken and not seek any advice from celebrities and refuse to watch this dysfunctional behaviour and, instead begin to boycott such nonsense by turning off their TV, tablets and laptops. All this has happened so quickly due to the internet, the fast pace in which we can access news, whether we want it or not, it will pop up via our screens. The deterioration of love and respect for one another is equally evident and is made difficult from the offensive lyrics and images that we are constantly bombarded with throughout our day.
Do you think society has been greatly influenced consciously or unconsciously by those trends? Shed light on it.
Sandra:
The internet is a powerful tool, it beams in images from all around the world and if people are feasting on these images, it will eventually alter the way they see their world. The power of the internet is insidious as you become what you think about all day long. Pornography amongst men, women and young children is increasing daily. The webcam means that men can see women in all states of undress and can pay for this too. People are being encouraged to act outrageously on TV programmes and are being paid to do just that. Nothing is sacred anymore. The quality of the adverts on our TV screens has degenerated where adult type adverts are being put on during the day, which are totally inappropriate for kids. The increased use of technology has brought many challenges for parents as kids have access to all kind of things on the internet. Overall, the challenges that men, women and children have to face have greatly increased as a result of the internet. We are constantly being bombarded with information, and all of this is planting ideas, beliefs the majority stripping away Godly principles, values and beliefs that were once the staple diet of the UK society.
Do celebrities really have the right to their private lives without the cameras and reporters sprawling around them?
Sandra:
Until people become “disinterested in all things celebrity” the reporters have to run down the stories, because that is how they make money, keep on making money and the celebrities keep making money. Reporters and celebrities are in bed together, half the stories are the creation of PR firms, and yes, we are being exploited daily for our desire to know more about celebrities. The fact that we want to know about their private lives is the reason the reporters, photographers and celebrities are themselves making money.
What factors do you think are responsible for short-lived celebrity marriages?
Sandra:
The pressure of fame is one factor, the other factor is celebrities seem so preoccupied in being out there, being seen that they do not have time for the things of God and discovering who they truly are, let alone work on their relationships. The arena they are in, such events as divorce are part of the territory. Divorce also is big business for the celebrities, divorce lawyers and the fans, for some it did their career a world of good eg. Nicole Kidman, ex-wife of Tom Cruise. Jennifer Lopez, getting a divorce from Mark Antony etc.
Which celebrity marriage inspires you the most? Why?
Sandra:
There isn’t any celebrity marriage that I am aware of that inspires me. The truth is, the track record of celebrities is so dismal that it would be the last place I would look for inspiration.
Nudity is becoming ‘fashionable’ these days amongst celebrities. Big names are showing off their ‘assets’ in full public glare. What is responsible for this? Are you worried?
Sandra:
They do say “Sex sells” we see Beyonce, Nicki Minaj and the other stars wearing little or nothing – it is what is expected of women. It is to shock, it is to help sell records, clothing lines, keep their name in the public eye, and raise continued brand awareness. Some women do it to create more interest and the trend is for more and more women to follow suit. However more and more men are now being asked to do naked scenes in movies. Nothing is sacred anymore!
How much of role-modeling should we expect from celebrities?
Sandra:
By the recent stories, we should not be looking to celebrities to be role models – their job is to sell their brand, get their faces in the paper, to be considered for the next big role, project etc and they are motivated to get what they want by any means necessary. The last thing on their minds is to be role-models, as the industry they work in wants them to strip themselves bare mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually to receive monetary rewards ie. their house, car, parties, yachts, and be on the red carpet to be seen and everyone screaming their names which equals more money, projects, work coming their way.
Do you think the media is more driven by profits than by morality?
Sandra:
It is all about money and those in the game have to be strong enough (without morals) in order to win.
What description of media-celebrity interface or relationship do you have in your ideal world?
Sandra:
In all honesty, I really do not have time to follow celebrities, my mind is focused more important things – learning my craft and being the best I can be at it. I have over the last 3 days been looking at Oprah, Lisa Nichols, and Iyanla Vanzant via YouTube. I would love to meet them, but if I did not, my life would go on and so would theirs. Celebrities are people, they can never ever give me the peace and joy that I receive when I am in communion with God, nothing can compare.
With the internet it also means that I have access to celebrities via Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms, I can go to events that they will be at etc, join their webinars, read their books, watch videos etc.
Are celebrities under pressure to please their fans at any cost? Is the media responsible for this?
Sandra:
They are under pressure, Beyonce and Mariah Carey have both admitted that they have dieted to keep the fans happy. The celebrities know that their image and how their fans and the media want them to look determines the amount of money they can make and the endorsements they can get.
How do you think celebrities can manage their fame and endorsements without losing their marriages?
Sandra:
For some celebrities they are like powerhouses – it is just a business arrangement to be with their spouse, it makes good business sense and the endorsements come about as a result of that union. Some celebrities marry because they believe that they have found “the one” and profit from their union also in the form of endorsements, these enable them to afford the extravagant lifestyle they favour. Without knowledge of self, without the knowledge of God and His spiritual laws, celebrities will fail at marriage. Most celebrities are preoccupied with thoughts on how are they going to afford to keep the cars, clothes, jewels and clothes. If they are not working they have to give it all the extravagant lifestyle items back. The pressure individually and jointly to manage fame and endorsement deals simultaneously is great.
When a celebrity marriage fails, what else fails?
Sandra:
When marriage fails the whole of the family on both sides suffer and all those individuals that are interested in either of the parties individually or jointly. Society suffers as if misinterpreted, could signal onlookers to not try so hard with their own marriages.
Do you think the advent of social media has done more harm to celebrities than good?
Sandra:
Yes because pictures are easily accessible, and kiss and tell stories are frequently exposed on the internet. Some newspapers and magazines have special phone in numbers to report what they know and with improvements in technology can take photos from their phone, tablet, ipod. The latest trend is for celebrities to have slanging matches over Twitter hurling insults at one another – believe me, such behaviour is distasteful – and children can see all of the fights on Twitter of their celebrities without censorship.
What’s your advice to a young promising celebrity out there?
Sandra:
Never lose sight of God, never compromise your principles. Make sure to be emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually healthy before entering the celebrity arena. Be disciplined, understand your weaknesses and work on fixing and healing yourself before entering such an arena. Have a strong, unbreakable relationship with God. Make sure that God is your 1st love every single minute and hour of each day. Do not be seduced by money or stuff, it will open up doors which will expose your insecurities. Focus on living a Godly life. Be willing to walk away from “the Celebrity circuit”, if what is being asked of you is not for your highest good and the good of all.
